Guilherme Moerbeck It was a great pleasure for me to meet Dr. Moerbeck, over email, in January of 2012, when he wrote to me about the prospect of spending time working on his dissertation research at Brown. We had been put in touch by a former professor of mine in Cambridge, Simon Goldhill, who from his correspondence with Dr. Moerbeck immediately recognized how many interests we shared. I was then delighted that Dr. Moerbeck was then able to spend three months with us at Brown, from November 2012 until January 2013. During that time, I profited a great deal from our conversations-often at the local Greek restaurant, “Andreas”-about ancient Greek drama, politics and religion, but also about the different traditions of classical studies in our two countries. The whole department was also grateful that Dr. Moerbeck shared some of his research with us, at a “noontime talk” in December. It has been wonderful to see Dr. Moerbeck’s work evolve over the last five years. His master dissertation thesis, which formed the basis of Guerra, política e tragédia na Atenas Clássica (Paco Editorial - 2014), proved a fitting testament to the breadth of his learning and to the innovativeness of his approach. I was honored that the Department of Classics at Brown had played some small role in its development. Few scholars working today have such a deep and equal command of Athenian drama and history on the one hand, and contemporary sociological and anthropological theory on the other. Departing from the work of Pierre Bourdieu, Dr. Moerbeck has reappraised the Athenian festival of the Great Dionysia-the festival at which every surviving ancient Greek tragedy would have premiered-and its entire cultural milieu. Focusing on the tumultuous last quarter of the fifth century BCE, Dr. Moerbeck’s work exposes just how deeply implicated and imbricated drama was in Athenian life, especially during the period of the Peloponnesian War. His work has acquired, perhaps, an especial urgency in our own era-one which, like the last decades of the Athenian fifth century, is marked by uncertainty and an aggressive discourse of anxiety over cultural decline. This publication of his work, the product of many years of careful research and study, is truly an achievement to be celebrated.
